General Contractor

Is it a Good Idea to Hire a General Contractor for Smaller Projects?

Most people think of general contractors when they need to have large construction projects done. Such projects include the building of houses or commercial buildings, excavations and siteworks, and other such large-scale efforts. However, it can also be a good idea to get a general contractor for projects like deck construction, roofing, siding, and window installation.

The main reason for this is that a general contractor is able to negotiate better prices than most people can on their own. General contractors also know which subcontractors do the best work, have space in their schedules, and are willing to take on these projects. On your own, you would have to do all of the vetting work yourself, and you may find that your chosen company is already booked. If it is, it is usually booked with work that was sent to them by general contractors.

Another reason to use a general contractor is that sometimes, small projects are not simple ones. For example, a window installation job often reveals that the old windows had been leaking. This results in the rotting of the framing timbers around the window hole, and typically, the rot extends toward the floor since the leaked water flowed downward. Any electrical wiring or outlets in this area may also have become corroded. Because of this, multiple subcontractors may be called in to repair the damage caused by the leaky window before a new one is put in.

This is just one example of when a small project can become complex. Even with new construction, challenges can arise. With that in mind, using a general contractor for everything from deck construction to excavations and siteworks just makes sense.
